Despite his exhaustion, Grant tossed all night, convinced he was infected, and, if so, what about Kate? What would become of the two of them? What if she was right about the mammoth?

As he crawled bleary-eyed from their tent, a ranger emerged through the fog carrying a cardboard box and set it on the picnic table, then backed away.

“Hello again,” Kate called out from the tent opening. “Michael, this is my colleague Dr. Grant Poole.”

Grant waved. “What’s in the box?”

“Breakfast. I told my wife about the two of you, and she wanted to make sure you had plenty to eat. I walked it over from our house nearby.”

Lifting the lid, Grant pulled out containers of scrambled eggs, hash browns, ham, orange juice, and two covered coffee cups. “This is awesome. Thanks, man.”
